Vitreoretinal surgery

Retinal and vitreous microsurgery: restoring and preserving vision in retinal detachment, macular holes, and other complex conditions.

About the service

Vitreoretinal surgery is one of the most complex fields of ophthalmology. It helps with retinal detachment, macular holes, diabetic retinopathy, vitreous hemorrhage, and other diseases of the posterior segment of the eye. The main goal is to prevent vision loss and restore vision as much as possible.

SAIF OPTIMA performs vitrectomy, including in combination with lens replacement, tamponade and silicone oil removal, as well as intravitreal drug injections. Surgeons work with the ZEISS OPMI Lumera 700 surgical microscope with a built-in intraoperative OCT, which makes it possible to see retinal structures directly during surgery.

Process

How treatment works:

  • Diagnostics: fundus examination, OCT, and ocular ultrasound for an accurate assessment of the retina.
  • Surgery: performed on an outpatient basis and, if necessary, “asleep” under sedation or under general anesthesia.
  • Follow-up: after surgery, regular check-ups with an ophthalmologist and strict adherence to their recommendations are important.

FAQ

Sudden “flashes” and “floaters” in front of the eye, a haze or “curtain” in the field of vision, or distortion of straight lines. These symptoms may indicate retinal detachment — in such cases, it is important to see an ophthalmologist as soon as possible.

It is a microsurgical operation in which the altered vitreous body is removed. It gives the surgeon access to the retina to repair a detachment, tears, or hemorrhages.

Silicone oil temporarily fills the eye cavity and holds the retina in place while it reattaches. Once the retina has stabilized, the oil is removed — the surgeon determines the timing.

Drug injections into the vitreous body are used for wet age-related macular degeneration, diabetic macular edema, and certain other conditions. The doctor determines whether injections are needed and how many.

Yes. For international and out-of-town patients, a medical tourism program is available, including transfer, accommodation at the IRIS hotel, and full support at all stages of treatment.
